Our checklists

Up until week 8 & 9 Room 17 & 18 Have been given planners to plan what we are going to do in the day. This week, (wk 8) however we were given checklists and barely any new tasks. We were just instructed to finish off old tasks that we had been given and never been able to do. This was a chance to catch up on all of our unfinished activities, like Tic-Tac-Toe* and our maths Inquirys. I was extemely glad that we got to catch up in our school time, not in the holidays. Well, at least we had a chance to.

*The tic tac toes are the three reading groups- Raglan, Bethells and Kere kere- follow up. It includes gaining 250 points, by doing activities including your novel that you have read. These include, recreating a scene from the book on wevideo, Which includes finding actors, and doing a LOT of planning.

Here is the starting of my activity 9

Zonals

26/11/18

On tuesday, (27/11/18) a few chosen tuakana athletes were chosen to go to the zonals athletics day. I will write an update on wedensday, when it has been. But it is tomorrow, and I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOO nervous! You never know what could happen. You could get disquailfied, or you could knock down the pole in high jump.

Events I will be competing in:
1. 100m sprints
2. 800m or 400m sprints
3. High jump
4. Relays

28/11/18
(One day after athletics)

On athletics day I can't tell you how nervous I was. The 800m was first, and all the 11, 10 and 9 year old girls got ready to race. We were lined up in our schools behind our cones, but me and Amaria were the farthest away from the man who was speaking, and we were the closest to the roaring crowd. And authough we were trying to listen, we couldn't hear anything. We watched as another group of girls got up and lined up. But the lanes were full so we couldn't have raced anyway. About 7 to 10 seconds later, We realised that they were the 10 year old girls. (But of course we didn't hear that, and the lanes were full?!) So we started running, but of course we came last! It was so unfair how we couldn't hear what he was saying!!! Next it was 100m for 10 year old girls. Luckly, I got to my race on time. THREE, TWO, ONE- BANG!  and I was surging foward! In my peripheral vision I could see I was tying with a girl on my right, and a someone else who was on my left was in front of me a little. When we got to the end, somone yelled "Red"!!! Oratia! you came second! I was so exited! I had come SECOND! I sat down, proudly smiling. About thirty seconds later the same person yelled "Oratia"! Seeing as I was the only person from Oratia, I stood up. "Your not in the finals! You came third. The placing person got it wrong. Go back to your seat now" I was so annoyed! How can they realise that without seeing the race again? And besides, I was tying with the person, she definatley was not in front of me. But then, after a while of sitting and watching- It was relays. My favourioute event. This couldn't go wrong! And luckly, It didn't. My team had trained to pass the battern swiftly without dropping it. We also had trained to say GO! before they had got there to pass the battern. It helped a lot. The last event, was high jump. I made it until 1.10 meteres when I knocked down the pole. Then It was FINALLY time to go back to school! Athletics was really fun overall!

I am unable to get pictures because there were no I-pads for taking photos sorry.

An additional blog post about bunnies

I have already done my blog post and have done this one at home.
You can also comment which breed is your favourite!

In Mackenzies comment, she asked me to tell you the difference between a rabbit and a bunny. They are basically the same thing, but when you see a six week old kit (Baby bunny) your most likely to say ohhh, what a adorable baby bunny, not rabbit. But as the rabbit/bunny ages, you tend to call it more of a rabbit, not a little bunny. I hope this explanaiton makes sense.

Awesome Plates

Our Awesome Plates

When Rm 17/18's Teachers (Mrs Maguire & Miss Jackson) Asked us to take our Journals* and put them on a table, I was confused. Then we were asked to go the middle page and write our name in the middle of the two pages I really did not have a clue what we would be doing. It turned out that we were writing Awesome plates, and this was achived by people of our class going and writing in other peoples Journals of what they were good at/nice & kind things. (We couldn't write nice things in our own though!😫)

*You can go down to the previous blog to find out about our Journals

Journal writing 😎

😎Journal writing😎

On monday, my class, room 17&18 started writing in our journals. Our spare book was used as a journal, but before we could start writing Mrs Maguire and Miss Jackson talked to us about how they are not diarys, and both boys and girls write in them. We also talked about the diffrent types of Journals, such as the secretive diarys, and the Journals that people simply use to write their thoughts and feelings about the recent happenings. After everyone understood the full definition of a Journal, we finally got to write! We had learnt that we were only writing for ourselves, and no one else had permission to read your Journal unless you said so. And only then you could read it out to them, not them reading in their heads. It is a must do, and you need to do it at least once a day. But when we got our new books, hang on, let me repeat that- NEW BOOKS!

Rules for new books:

1. Only neat writing
2. NO FOLDING PAGES
3. Only small drawings
4. No bending book cover

I think you get the message. I hope. Because every book I have had before somehow breaks one or two of those rules. I hope my Journal does not lose its new look soon. I write in my Journal things that happened in the day, and what my thoughts and feelings about them were.

Novel studies

Novel studies

novel studies is where the reading groups Bethells, Raglan and Kerekere pick a novel to read over the next few weeks. Once we have finished our novels, we will do some activities that will be explained by our teacher/s (Mrs Maguire/Miss Jackson) Along with novel studies, we also have writing tasks, where this week we pick a picture to write about. I chose the one about toilet paper (not as weird as it sounds) But it was a draw between the toilet paper one and the baby that poured pasta on him/her self. Next I would have done the banana factory with the banana obsessed worker/minion/banana lover. These two tasks were my favourite tasks of the week. The two other reading groups don't get novels till later. (I don't know why)

Going to Tiarua

Going to Tiarua

The beach
The beaches at Tiarua are like at piha. They usually have violent dumper waves, and most people are unluckly at least once and get dumped. The sand also has many pippi shells. If you are lucky, you will find a scollop shell that is still together that opens and closes. Me and my family went on a hunt and found around forty all together! The waves and currents aren't always bad though. Once I was lucky enough to be there when the oceans were so calm that dolphins were swimming 15 meteres of shore! But to go from violent dumping waves to the calm waters of a lake, It was pretty crazy!

Paku Hill
Paku hill Is the hill our beach house/batch is built on. Out from the deck their is a really good view of the lagoon. It looks so close like you can just jump and you will land on the beach, but we all know that It is way further than it looks. But on the good side, you can walk just about anywhere from paku. The exersise park is one of the places. It is a mixture of getting exersise and doing REALLY fun things. I think that the walk to the exersise park is around three to four kilometeres? That might not be right though. You can also walk to the beach, the lagoon, the tiny village or the dairy.

My overall holiday
My overall holiday was good, but I didn't get to do all the things I was looking foward to. Like the spa, normally after the freezing beach we will jump in and warm up, but it was broken!!!😨 That mean't showers as soon as we got home and that wasn't nearly as fun. Lucky we didn't go tho the beach to much so I didn't get dumped!!! also, It was way too cold to so much as dip you toes in the water!

Fast ball!

Playing Fast ball

On the 7th of september room 17/18 played fast ball.  Not everyone played it though, it was only for people who had finished their must do's. Fast ball is a game that is played with a rugby ball, inside, and is very, very fast! Once we were inside the hall miss Jackson split us into two groups. If you were orange, you were defending the blue and trying to score on the orange mat. If you were blue, it was the other way round. Unfortunately, there were no bibs, so it caused a lot of confusion. The challange of playing fast ball was the scoring- you had to land with your whole body on the mat and the ball in your hand. I was proud when I passed the ball to someone in my group who was so close the goal they jumped on easily. Next time I need to remember to take my socks off first- before I look like I am trying to ski on the carpet! Overall, I had a really good time and I hope more people are able to play it next time.

Marketing Day!!!

Marketing Day!

(Also known as Taste Of Oratia)
  Our final product was:
Soup and sourdough bread. My group made this choice because when our class had soup day everyone went for the creamy vegetable soup. This inspiried ideas for doing creamy vegetable soup since we knew so many people already loved it. It also made sense that we do veggie soup because one of our essential attributes were hidden vegetables! The challenging things about being a marketing director were having the BIGGEST job and on top of that being away for two days. Our successes were that we achived a nice stall sign, made successful bunting, and that I remembered to bring my garlic, tablecloth, and voting box. Some of our essential attributes were- apart from hidden veggies- Filling, not too much sugar, includes fruit, gluten free and dairy free options, and includes protein. You can guess that we took a while deciding what to do!

Winter sports

My non-winter sports day

On monday the 27th of August most people in tuakana went to winter sports. The reason I didn't go was because I did out of school netball and I didn't see the point in going. So when it was zonals day me and a few other people went to room 1 and 2. It was quite fun being the only seiniors in rm 1/2 because we were the helpers and role models. This was because in rm 17/18 everyone is a similar age. It was a fun day overall even though I didn't choose to go to zonals with a lot of my friends. But of corse, our class room was locked! So it was a HUGE pain whenever we needed to get somthing out of our class. Also, I always forget which way to turn the key so we ended up coming back ten minutes late because of it. (The whole class was packing up) at lunch, you could say playing with juinors is a, well experince if you'd call it that. It was definately different from being with people your own age. The highlight of the day was in between morning tea and lunch when it was gymnastics time! I was a helper on the beam, and miss Lewis was right, I definately got board of walking down from the top of the beam to the bottom every person in case they fell off. It was a big relief when Ella came along and helped me with it. In the last session of gym, when Ella came to help, and she instructed them on how to land without injury- because people in the last class kept saying OWWW!, when they landed, so Ella helped by showing them how to land safely.

Speeches

Doing a speech

In Room 17/18 we are looking at doing speeches, but only seven out of fifty six chose to do one though. For me, I thought that doing a speech would be a great learning experince, and somthing I could put my mind to and finish. (I tend to forget most big things I'm ment to do) I also wanted to do it to raise awareness about buying product with palm oil in it, So you can guess I'm doing a Argument. I wonder how many people buy nutella? You can suvive without it. But one thing, orangutans can NOT live without their forests, so whats more inpoartant? Saving the orangutans or eating nutella with your sandwhich? Thats one of the reasons why It needs to stop.

Procedural Text

Learning about procedural text

Lately room 17/18 have been learning about procedural text . Loads of people didn't know what it even was at first , Including me ! A n example of a procedural text is a process , for example a instruction manual or  a recipe . After we understood what a procedural text was , we got to write our own . We were given a breif instructing us to create a recipe. I based mine on making chocolate milk because it is a simple recipe to create a delicious drink. You also only need two ingredints - milk and drinking chocolate. Another way of making chocolate milk would be to make hot chocolate and putting it in the fridge (I think that would work ...) to cool it down . But the way I make it it is faster and you do not have to put it in the fridge after ! Lots of people did smoothies and other drinks , but not everyone did drinks . Lots of people knew a recipe for pancakes by heart , and a few people did porrage !

An example of  a procedural text using a instruction sheet

How to do Two person skipping:

YOU WILL NEED:
1. A friend a similar height as you,
2. A skipping rope both of you can skip with room to spare

METHOD:
1. Stand next to your buddy so your shoulders are touching
2. Hook the skipping rope behind both of your legs and hold one handle each
3. Swing the skipping rope over both of your heads and jump over it when it comes to your feet
4. Repeat as long as you like
5. Double check that you and your buddy are doing the same type of jumps .

HERE IS A VIDEO OF WHAT IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE:

Tic Tac Toe

This is my update on P.J .

(I am sorry but I can't get any photos at the moment .) In the video it shows him as a skittish , nervous sort of bunny that loves carrots . Now , however , he bounds over from the other side of the lawn to get his occasional carrot . He lets me scratch him on the nose as long as I give him somthing in return ( A carrot , slice of apple or banana E.C.T) sadly , he does not let me get any closer than that . He (as you can see in the video) Is free range with his much loved compainion , Patch. Sadly , she vanished without a trace . We think the sudden change of patch vanishing made P.J need people more because he was lonely . ( We Have no clue AT ALL what happened to her . In the video the really friendly white bunny ? That was Patch . She wouldn't have run away without P.J and she was too big for any cat or bird . I'd rather not think about what may have happened to her .)

This is my update update of P.J.

Incentive Awards

For my tic tac toe reflection I did a wevideo on the incentive awards for gymnastics that Saskia and I went to .The negative effect it had on us was it was very stressful , but the positive effect was that we may move up . When we were at the Incentive Awards I liked how we were not asked to do anything beyond our ability so we did not get any lower scores for not being able to do it .

cross country

before cross country

date : 1st may 2018

It is tuesday , the second day of term two , and the day of the schools cross country . I will be doing two laps this year , and most people are really stressed and nervous . me and my friends all know it is about the exercise , but the also knowing that if you score a top place then you go to zonals does not help . very soon we will be having cross country

After cross country

date : 2 may 2018

after the cross country everyone was quite shaken . my throat was really sore because I unfortunately had a developing cold . I was covered in a lot of horrible icky mud , but I still felt quite proud that I had still scored a place as the first reserve even though I fell over . I came seventh , though I was hoping for fifth  or lower . at the beginning I was starting to come first , but a few people overtook me when I was still running , and when I fell .

The Perfect Gift

Last friday,

we all went to the hall for a musical . it was called "The Perfect gift , and for a long time no-one knew why . the show was about never giving up , even when lots of terrible things happen and make it tempting . the three actors were very funny and humorous , while they played their part . they had also gathered all the student leaders to do a dance at the end . in the show , they had a board that told them what to do for entertainment and the three subjects were :
Play around,
Clean room
and Mums birthday.
once they had finished playing around they went to do the next activity . but instead of reading it properly they thought it was something along the lines of clean up whatever is in the toilets. the same thing happened with the apparent "Mums bir da da ! it was a really funny and humorous story .

Koru Art

koru Art

A few weeks ago my class did a art lesson on how to blend . We were told to draw a koru choose 3 different colours and blend them inside the koru .

  1. First , we were given a practice sheet and some chalk . we designed what we were going to do and we practiced our blending .
  2. Secondly we went and showed our practice sheet to linda, miss Maguire,s mother.
  3. Third we were given a piece of proper paper and we lightly outlined a koru shape .
  4.  Then we got our three colours and started blending .
  5.  after  we had done our blending , some peoples still looked a bit scratchy and did not blend well so linda gave us some tips , like rubbing where we wanted it to blend - that helped mine a lot .
  6. finally we hung our art on the walls .

Health and p.e reflection

my reflection
For health and pe I found it harder to work because we all had to to talk together. I made a pair of head- phones because I felt listened to and we used one of  my ideas - it worked in the practice but  sadly not in the real thing .

The Swim Team

Trying out for the swim team

Me Lily and Poppy H were all very stressed . Lily
and Poppy H had got in last year while I had not even heard of it .I
think I was in fiji . when we lined up I had felt if hundreds of butterflies had suddenly hatched in my stomach . NEXT ! my line stood up and got in the pool . The water was icy cold . GO!  I pushed off with my back legs and streaked through the buckets of icy water. my lungs tightened and I started struggling for breath . then , my hand touched something rough and hard witch was the end of the pool.  when I found out I got in the swim team I was sick with nerves. the practices were ok , but I can't imagine how stressful the real thing will be.
